St. George’s forced to field a new-look side

OJ Pitcher: Certain selection for St. George's.

Two changes have been forced upon them with the unavailability of Glenn Blakeney and Stefan Kelly, but it is expected that challengers St. George’s could make as many as four or five when the selectors deliberate on Saturday night. The onus is on the challengers to select a winning team to win back the cup they lost by a surprisingly 10-wicket margin last year.Captain Oronde Bascome, who missed last year’s match because of illness, is a certain inclusion as, it would appear, is OJ Pitcher who virtually picks himself with his solid batting and steady medium pace. And teenager Onias Bascome, brother of the captain, is another strong contender, having just hit form last weekend with one of the season’s top knocks of 148 against Somerset in the league. However, the bowling will need to be tweaked, too. Lateef Trott of Bailey’s Bay and George O’Brien of St. David’s are the two main contenders to replace Kelly, while club player Zeko Burgess could put his name into the mix with a strong performance on Saturday.Kyle Hodsoll and Justin Pitcher, who made up the three-prong seam attack last year along with Kelly, have some work to do to keep their places. It wasn’t Hodsoll or Pitcher who shared the new ball with Kelly last year, but rather spinner Delyone Borden who claimed four for 78 off 23 overs in the first innings.Pitcher bowled just five overs in the whole match and sometimes looked a disinterested figure when moving around the field. It was suggested that some players were not giving their full support to captain Lionel Cann.New chairman of selectors, Charlie Marshall, has stated publicly that players will have to earn their spots this year, so a committee that also includes former captain Wendell Smith and ex-players Gary Brangman and Herbie Bascome, might not be afraid to ring in the changes. When St. George’s last won the cup back at the first attempt in 1997, they included Brangman and Bascome in a team that contained four colts, yet still went on to win the game on a pitch that was prepared to produce a winner.Former Somerset captain and former selector John Tucker doesn’t see the champions making many changes to a team that looks solid and well balanced. Deunte Darrell is making a case for a recall along with seamers Kevin Hurdle and Jordan DeSilva and spinner Joshua Gilbert who is battling for a spot along with Derek Brangman and Jacobi Robinson from last year’s team. Brangman provides variety as a left-hander while Robinson’s solid batting gives them some extra depth in that department. The batting looks solid with Chris Douglas and Terryn Fray likely to continue as opener, followed by Bermuda captain Stephen Outerbridge, Tre Manders who scored 170 last weekend, Janeiro Tucker and captain Jekon Edness who was their top bat last year with 67 in the first innings before retiring hurt with cramp.“I can see possibly one change, probably bringing in an all-rounder,” said Tucker. “One of my goals when I was a selector was trying to build the team for the future. Last year we brought in a few youngsters and they were successful in their first year in Cup Match, so now that they have one year under their belt they can go down there with a little bit more experience.”Malachi Jones, colt Greg Maybury and Kamau Leverock provided an effective seam attack for Somerset last year, though it was Janeiro Tucker who was their best bowler in the first innings with six for 28 off 14 overs. Maybury claimed five for 18 in the second.“Somerset have to go down there and play positive cricket, I’m not talking about sitting on your bat and playing for a draw, that’s not my style,” said Tucker who believes that if the wicket favours the bowling then Somerset have the bowlers to take advantage.“It depends on the wicket because St. George’s are probably going to prepare a wicket that pops up and bounces, but Somerset have good, attacking bowlers. We’ve got the bowlers to do the job, three pace bowlers, medium and spin. They (St. George’s) will have to take chances because they don’t have the trophy.“I think it is going to be a very interesting game but Somerset will come out on top.”** Meanwhile, there is a full slate of matches scheduled for Logic Premier Division action on Sunday with Eastern Counties rivals Bailey's Bay and St David's locking horns at Lord's.The western derby also takes place as Somerset Bridge welcome Somerset to White Hill Field, while St George's host Devonshire Rec at Wellington Oval.PHC and Flatts do battle at PHC Field, Cleveland County make the trek to tackle Western Stars at St John's Field and Willow Cuts play Warwick at Southampton Oval. All games are scheduled for 11am start.
