The yacht Sea Dragon

If you like it hard, fast and wet, consider taking part in an extreme sailing adventure from Halifax to Bermuda in October. The Another World Adventures company is organising a trip on the marine research yacht Sea Dragon that is open to people in Bermuda.“This 14-day voyage is for sailors looking for a more rugged offshore adventure,” said Larissa Clark, founder of Another World Adventures which specialises in unusual or adventurous travel.Sea Dragon was originally built for the Global Challenge Race in 1996, but was later refitted as a marine research vessel.“She is an amazing sea worthy off shore sailing vessel,” said Ms Clark. “She has wind power and a solar panel, and also a mini research lab and can do a whole range of science based exploration.“In the last three years she has sailed 50,000 miles between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean doing phenomenal research into topics such as ocean acidification and marine pollution.”Sea Dragon is currently sailing in the Great Lakes with a crew of educators who are learning about sailing and the marine ecosystem.Their voyage will finish in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Sea Dragon will leave Halifax for St George’s, Bermuda on October 5.The itinerary is tentative due to the unpredictable autumn weather in the Atlantic, but the crew will go through basic briefing and safety training and then explore the Nova Scotia coast, stopping in historic Lunenberg, and then visiting various wrecks and abandoned buildings on outlying islands such as Cape Sable or the Seal Islands.“Anyone who joins the crew will be part of organising the whole trip, helping to plot the navigation, and choosing when to set off,” said Ms Clark. “The crew will bring her down into Bermuda where she will spend a few weeks. She has some private research trips planned.”The next leg of her journey will be in November when she leaves Bermuda on an eight day trip to Red Hook, St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.“That trip will be all about celestial navigation and the crew will learn how to navigate using the sun, moon and planets,” said Ms Clark. “The Global Positioning System (GPS) will be switched off.“That should be quite exciting given the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. That region of the ocean will be an interesting and exciting place to go back to basics.”Another World Adventures helps people find out of the box travel opportunities. For example, they have organise d trips to Antarctica, helped a group to cycle the corridor between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, and also helped people raft from one side of Madagascar to the other.“It is a way for regular people to get out of their usual comfort zones and have a unique holiday or travel experience,” said Ms Clark. “The Sea Dragon is one of our partners.“We work with partners around the world to put together really unusual personal challenges from two week holidays to six month adventures. It is different for each client.”The trip from Halifax to Bermuda is $2,590 for 14 days. The celestial navigation journey is $2,165 for eight days. For more information see www.anotherworldadventures.com/adventures/extreme-sailing-adventure-canada-bermuda.
