Repairs to a collapsed wall on Angle Street will go to tender tomorrow, according to Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge. The wall, which borders Dellwood Middle School, collapsed in April, and as a result the nearby section of Angle Street has remained closed to traffic.Mr Outerbridge said he understands the public’s frustration, but that the repair job was more complicated than simply “putting up another wall”.“This wall was build back in the horse and carriage age and there has been a lot of progression in terms of the types of heavy vehicles using our roads these days,” he said. “I think the challenge, not just inside the city but outside the city, is our infrastructure sometimes can’t take the kind of weight and vibration that occurs on our roads.“Basically, we had to go out and engineer a replacement, get planning permission for it, and go to Government to get the sign offs. This Thursday we should be opening up the bids for actual construction.”He said work on the wall is hoped to start in early to mid September so the project can be completed by late October. The project will be paid for jointly by Government and the City of Hamilton.“We recognise the frustration the general public is feeling,” he said. “We ask for more patience as we work to remedy the situation and build a wall that will withstand the test of time and ensure the safety of everyone.”
