When it comes to ideas for community fundraising events, the Caines brothers are certainly able.

On the back their latest community outreach, where 215 schoolboys received free haircuts ahead of the new school year, Dwayne and Wayne Caines are now to host a basketball tournament to raise money for The Family Centre.

Dwayne, a Bermuda Police Service media-relations officer, said he and his brother, Digicel boss Wayne, saw it was “incumbent” on them to do their part in the community.

“Ms [Martha] Dismont and The Family Centre have been advocates for our community for many, many years,” he said. “We believe it’s a worthwhile charity to give our time and our resources to, to ensure that they actually meet their mandate.”

The event will feature a three point and slam dunk competition, along with a three-on-three tournament.

The tournament will be held at the CedarBridge gymnasium on November 16 from 6pm to 10pm, with the winning team receiving $1,000 in prize money.

Entry fees for the three-point and slam-dunk competition is $20, while the winners will receive $200 each.

For the three-on-three tournament, admission is $5 and the team entry fee is $40. Food will be on sale and all proceeds will go to the Family Centre.

“The Family Centre are behind the scenes and on the front-line dealing with the critical issues that affect all of Bermuda,” said Mr Caines. “And I think the least the beneficiaries — which is Bermuda — can do is find creative and innovative ways to support them financially, as well as through love and other intangible support.

“This is a practical opportunity to demonstrate our care and support of the family centre.”
