Skyfall the culmination of a semester’s hard work

Skyfall is coming.

No, it is not James Bond, but, you will hear the Adele melody interwoven with the 007 signature motif as the Bermuda Youth Orchestra belt out this contemporary piece, under the direction of Major Dwight Robinson, director of Music for the Bermuda Regiment Band.

“Skyfall,” the themed name for the Bermuda Youth Orchestra concert, to be held November 24 at the St John’s Anglican Church, will feature classical to Broadway to pop music at a high level of musicianship. There will be three pieces performed by BYO concert band and six pieces by the entire symphony.

“The production will last about an hour,” said Tiffany Fox, music teacher and trustee for the Bermuda Youth Orchestra.

This season began one week prior to the opening of school, when all members of the orchestra, coming from CedarBridge Academy, Sandys Secondary Middle School, Bermuda Institute, Bermuda High School, Warwick Academy, Somerfield, Saltus, and Berkeley Institute, spent a week in workshop, they called “School’s In”.

“We wanted to whip the students into shape as they prepare to start the school year,” said Fox.

Skyfall is the culmination of this semester’s rehearsal. It is a Symphony Orchestra featuring, brass, winds, strings and percussion, supported by the Bermuda Regiment Band. “The Bermuda Regiment Band has been working closely with the students to reinforce their musical growth,” said Fox.

Bermuda Youth Orchestra, was reestablished in February 2013, by CedarBridge Academy Music Teacher Tiffany Fox and Major Dwight Robinson.

“There are a number of small orchestra units that exist in Bermuda in both the public and private sector, but the majority of music students do not get a symphony experience. This is the aim of this group. Out of there is a concert band, a string orchestra and in January 2014 a Bermuda Youth Jazz Ensemble will be reestablished under the direction of Sheldon Fox, of Director of Music at Sandys Secondary Middle School,” she explained.

Students participating in this band are extremely busy. When school ended in June, there was the “Schools Out” concert. A week before school members attended the week long workshops for Strings dubbed “School In”, and in October there was a three-day workshop for winds, which laid the foundation for the concert band.

The BYO meet every Thursday, from 4:30-6pm at CedarBridge Academy Music Room for rehearsal.
