Men deny trespassing at Westgate

Two men accused of trespassing on Westgate property claim they were only there to collect sand for a fishing trip.

Tyler Christopher, 16, of Pembroke, and Chesterfield Johnson, 62, of Warwick, denied unlawfully trespassing on Westgate property in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said patrol guards spotted the two approaching the Westgate facility by boat.

Mr Christopher was found ten feet within the razor-wire perimeter, while Mr Johnson held the boat in place alongside some rocks, the court heard.

Patrol guards pursued Mr Christopher, but he and Mr Johnson sped away in the boat towards the Black Bay area.

Officers on land kept eyes on the vessel until the Marine Police were able to pull alongside and arrest the men.

Mr Christopher maintained he was never inside the razor-wire fence, saying he was only on the beach collecting sand to mix with bait and chum.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded the two in custody until their trial date on Tuesday.
