The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is hosting their Annual Children’s Reading Festival at Delta Winter Wonderland a.k.a. Victoria Park on Saturday, December 7th. With the aims of encouraging literacy and fostering a love of reading, while encouraging parents to understand how key it is to their children’s learning ability, this event will run from 11am until 3pm, with free books, free fun castles, a performance by Sandys Drumline, the chance to meet local authors, and fun activities for all ages. Story time will begin at 11.30am with special guest readers Margaret Fergusson (the Governor’s wife) and Nadia Aguiar (author of The Lost Island of Tamarind). There will also be another very special guest who will be travelling all the way from the North Pole … This event is free.

As previously mentioned, the Bermuda Christmas Boat Parade will be taking place on Saturday, December 7th. But why watch the parade from land when you can view it from the water instead? Discovery Wines are offering a Christmas Boat Parade Cruise, with wine tasting and comfort food to go along with all the festivities and fireworks. The cruise will be aboard the Ana Luna, departing Barr’s Bay Park at 6pm. Tickets are $95 per person. Looking for a prime viewing space on land for the Boat Parade? The new Pier 6 Waterfront Complex will be open from 6pm until 9pm and, in addition a great view of the water, they will also offer food stations, a cash bar, Santa’s Village, DJ Choice, face-painting and more. Why go home after the Boat Parade when you can stay out for a great cause? Some of Bermuda’s best entertainers are coming together in support of the Philippines Relief Fund on Saturday, December 7th. The Live BDA Concert will also take place at the Pier 6 Waterfront Complex on Front Street from 10pm until 2am. As well as live music and dancing, this event will also feature food stations and cash bars. Confirmed performers so far include Heather Nova, Bones the Bermuda Blues Band, Working Title, Sonique Sanctuary, Sultans of Swing, Glass Onion Band, Devils Isle Audio, Joy T Barnum and Milton Raposo, and DJ Choice. Tickets are $20 per person and are available from www.pTix.bm. 100% of proceeds from this event will benefit charities and families affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Expect a relaxing evening at Anya Ozarowska’s Chant and Be Happy seminar on Tuesday, December 10th at My Sereni-Tea. From 7pm until 9pm, there will be uplifting yoga sounds chanted with accompaniment of musical instruments, deep breathing and chanting, and an inspiring talk about benefits of chanting. TROIKA Bermuda are continuing with their mission to keep the drama onstage, by giving young people the opportunity to get involved in dramatic art, song and dance. Auditions for their next production, Work in Progress #5: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, will be on Sunday, December 15th at the Berkeley Institute. This will be from 2pm until 8pm and auditionees are asked to prepare two contrasting 32-bar selections in the style of the show. The show itself is scheduled for August 2014. Offering a range of performances by a diverse selection of artists of international repute, the 2014 edition of the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts will run between Thursday, January 16th and Saturday, March 1st. Featured artists include vocal sensation Pentatonix, Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black, Melanie Marshall (vocalist), Martin Hayes (fiddle) and Dennis Cahill (guitar) in Concert, Lloyd Matthew and Bermuda Chamber Choir, Eugene O’Neill’s Pulizter Prize-winner Long Day’s Journey into Night, Noche Flamenca with Soledad Barrio, A Celebration of Harold Pinter performed by Julian Sands, Bermuda Jazz featuring Tony Bari and Friends, Onyx Brass and The Complete Beatles Tribute performed by American English. In addition to the performances, there is also a series of complementary events, including adult workshops and outreach programmes for students.
