Karen Douglas-Raynor, the deputy principal of Sandys Secondary Middle School, died this weekend at the age of 53.

The Ministry of Education and Economic Development, together with the Department of Education, yesterday extend condolences to the family of Mrs Douglas-Raynor and the Sandys Secondary Middle School community.

“Losing a family member is always painful. Losing a family member at Christmas time is even more so,” Leah Scott, Junior Minister of Education, said. “We send our thoughts and prayers to the family of Mrs Douglas-Raynor at this difficult time.”

Mrs Douglas-Raynor was diagnosed with cancer in October 2011, but continued to work to advance herself, earning her Master’s Degree in Leadership from Walden University last year.

Dozens of friends, colleagues and former students signed an online guest book following Mrs Douglas-Raynor’s passing, praising the popular educator and expressing their condolences to her family.

“Mrs Raynor always had a kind, gently spirit that my children enjoyed while at Sandys Secondary Middle School. She will truly be missed,” wrote Joseph Smith, president of the Parent Teacher Association.

“I can remember I had a project to do where I had to build an Island from mud, and cardboard, and some tree leaves, and Miss Raynor, and her husband, stayed behind one evening until 9pm at school to help me finish my project,” Akilah Martin said. “She was a great help to my mom and I while we lived in Bermuda.”

“It is with much pleasure that I got to know Mrs Raynor, and even taught by her,” wrote Kyla Evans. “Throughout the years she has always greeted me with a warm beautiful smile, hugs, and always wished me well.”

Judy Bartley meanwhile summed up the feelings of many: “Karen had a beautiful spirit. She maintained a smile and exuded a sense of peace. At this time, my heartfelt best wishes to the family. She will be greatly missed as both my family member and professional colleague,” she wrote.
