Framing Bermuda’s victories and beauty in photographic exhibition
When beloved Royal Gazette photojournalist Tamell Simons lost his battle with cancer 18 months ago, this newspaper decided to honour his life and career with the ‘One Love’ photo exhibit at the Bermuda Society of the Arts.
It proved to be a great success — and after being inundated with positive feedback our photography team has decided to do it again.
They will be hosting a new exhibit at BSoA called ‘Celebrating Bermuda’, which captures some of the great local victories and triumphs they’ve witnessed on camera. The team is also hoping to make it an annual event.
Proceeds raised from the show will go towards supporting The Reading Clinic, which helps children with specific reading disabilities like dyslexia.
Picture editor David Skinner said the exhibit aimed to remind people of some of the great local milestones of the past two years.
He said: “We all hear how the media focuses too much on the negative side of the island, but this is to demonstrate that we also cover positive and uplifting stories. The pictures in the show captures Bermuda’s victories and beauty.”
Mr Skinner said the island overall has experienced a lot of hardship over the past few years. And as a result some people have forgotten about the beauty that surrounds us every day.
“We quickly forget what is good about our island home and how much good is done here; such as the many achievements of our fellow Bermudians,” he said.
“It’s our aim to bring these memories back to the forefront of the viewer’s mind — to remind everyone about how lucky we are to be living in place such as Bermuda.”
When asked if he had any favourite photos in the exhibit, Mr Skinner said he couldn’t pick just one.
“Since photography, as an art form, is subjective, I will let the public decide that for themselves, but I think they are all pretty special,” he said. “The show is the work of Royal Gazette photo journalists Mark Tatem, Glenn Tucker, Akil Simmons and myself.”
‘Celebrating Bermuda’ will be on display in the Onions Gallery at the Bermuda Society of the Arts, located in City Hall, from tomorrow until January 23. There will be a special grand opening happening at the gallery tomorrow from 5pm until 7pm.
