Lifetime achievement award for Woolridge

Woolridge is honoured with an ICC Lifetime Achievement Award

CV “Jim” Woolridge, the veteran cricket commentator, is now the proud recipient of an International Cricket Council Lifetime Service Award.

The former Flatts wicketkeeper and opening batsman has been recognised by world cricket’s governing body for his lifetime service to local cricket through more than half a century of broadcasting.

The award caught Woolridge, 87, completely off guard.

“Naturally I am delighted and a bit surprised,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I do not know who was responsible for submitting my name and recommending me, but I appreciate it and just hope to be able to continue.

“Everything I did in connection with the great game called cricket was something that came out of the left side of my chest: my heart. I love the game.”

Woolridge’s award was one of three 2013 ICC Development Programme Awards for the Americas Region that the Bermuda Cricket Board received, including the Best Overall Development Programme.

According to an ICC press release, the BCB’s success was highlighted by their quality educational services, national cricket academy and strong administrative structures. The highlight was a 233 per cent increase achieved through the introduction of the Player Development League, which is designed to bridge the gap between junior and senior cricket.

Cal Waldron, a BCB executive, won the Volunteer of the Year Award for his services to local cricket as a player, coach, administrator and groundsman. The long-serving PHC member is also a National Academy director and coach, who also acts as an umpire and team Manager for touring teams. All regional winners will go forward to the global awards to be announced this year.
