Something for the weekends?

Back by popular demand after the last one sold out, Bermuda’s Birds: You Don’t Know What You Are Missing will return to BUEI on Thursday, February 6th. This illustrated lecture is in celebration of the Audubon Society’s 60th anniversary, and will be presented by Audubon Society President, Andrew Dobson. Andrew Dobson has been recording and photographing Bermuda’s birds for the past 24 years and in this lecture will describe the reasons why Bermuda has such an impressive variety of birds, one of the largest bird lists compared to those of Caribbean islands. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members and available from the Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI or from 294-0204.

An evening of praise and worship is in store at CedarBridge Academy’s Faith, Hope and Love Gospel concert at the Ruth Seaton James Centre on Saturday, February 8th. Doors open at 6.30pm and from 7pm, you can enjoy a variety of solos, liturgical dancing and choirs from performers including the CBA Alumni Choir, Tricray Astwood, Annointed for Praise Warriors, Lloyd Holder, Larrita Adderley and others. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and available from Peoples Pharmacy and CedarBridge Academy.

The West Indian Association (Bermuda) invite you to spread the love for a good cause at their Give From The Heart Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party at the Police Recreation Club on Friday, February 14th. From 9pm until 2am, you can enjoy music from DJ Ragin Bajan with a cash bar and light edibles for sale. General admission is $30 with proceeds in aid of Caribbean Flood Relief Efforts in St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Dominica. The Church Girls’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade are holding their popular fundraising Valentine’s Fair and Car Wash at St. Paul’s Church Hall on Saturday, February 15th. From 10am until 4pm, you can browse stalls with books, plants, White Elephant, As New, and more, with a bouncy castle, Take A Chance, fresh baked goods and refreshments including soups, chilli, codfish balls and hot dogs.

A great way to connect your children with the natural world around them, the Bermuda National Trust presents its Annual Children’s Nature Walk at Spittal Pond on Tuesday, February 18th. This is for parents and children aged between 5 and 12, running from 9.30am until noon, with groups leaving the eastern parking lot every 15 minutes. The walk takes approximately 90 minutes and you should wear suitable clothes and shoes for rugged terrain. Light snacks are available and you are invited to bring your own bottle for a trash-free event. The walk is not suitable for dogs, baby prams or very young children. The Annual Commemorative Service for Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale, USN, will be on Saturday, February 22nd. Midshipman Dale died on February 22nd, 1815, is said to be the last American casualty of the War of 1812. The event will begin with an introduction at 5pm in King’s Square, St George’s, in front of the Butterfield Bank Building (former Stennett’s Hotel, where he died) and then will proceed to his grave in St. Peter’s historic graveyard. From 6pm, there will be a reception and then dinner in Griffin’s Bistro at the St. George’s Club. The guest speaker is Edward Morgan Dale, the fourth great grand-nephew of Midshipman Dale. Dinner will be followed by an Art Auction to benefit the Friends of St. Peter’s Church. The cost for the reception and dinner is $70 per person, with a cash bar. Masterworks along with Fondazione Capri (Capri Foundation) will be hosting Capri Trend, an exhibition of photographers who will show our Bermudian art lovers the beauty of Capri through the artist’s contemporary view. Masterworks is the first host in a series of exhibitions as their artwork will be in various cities across the world, such as Hong Kong, Baku, Mumbai and Cape Town. Sorry adult runners, you’ll need to find something else to do that weekend as the 2014 KPMG Round the Grounds Race on Sunday, March 16th is for junior athletes ONLY! Held at the Botanical Gardens in Paget, this is for 4 to 18 year olds and the first race starts at 1pm. Masterworks will be providing children’s activities on the day and refreshments will be available from Flying Chef. Parking will be available in the Lagoon area opposite Botanical Gardens on South Road. This race is sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) in association with Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club.
