Former Premier David Saul and veteran educator Victor Scott have both been named Honorary Fellows of Bermuda College.

Both men were honoured in a ceremony at Coco Reef Hotel.

Before entering politics, Dr Saul taught at the old Sandys Grammar School and later served as deputy principal at Cavendish School.

After furthering his eduction in Canada, Dr Saul was tasked to carry out an in-depth study of Bermuda’s educational system.

The completed report made 93 recommendations to Government — including the establishment of the Bermuda College.

He later served as Permanent Secretary of Education, playing a key role in convincing Dr Archie Hollis and Dr George Cook to return to Bermuda and take up positions at the college and working with then Minister of Education Ernest Vesey to find its current Stonington Avenue home.

Dr Saul won a seat in Parliament in 1989 and served as Minister of Finance before becoming Premier in 1995, a position he held for two years.

He currently serves as director of Odyssey Marine Exploration Company, which specialises in exploring the deep ocean.

He also remains a competitive athlete, recently winning the over-70 category in the Men in Motion 5K race.

Dr Scott, whose late father Victor Scott was headteacher of the Central School in Pembroke (later renamed Victor Scott School in his honour), has a long history in the medical field.

He was a member of the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC between 1971 and 2008 when he retired as Professor of Medicine.

He served as Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology for 29 years before being named as interim chairman of the department in 2000, and interim Senior Vice-President for the Health Sciences at Howard in 2003.

He fully assumed the role of Senior Vice-President in 2005 before his retirement.

Dr Scott also made an impact in Bermuda, serving as the interim Chief of Staff at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital from 2012 to 2013.

He has also mentored more than a dozen Bermudian physicians who matriculated through Howard University College of Medicine during his tenure there.
