Lawyer Kim Wilson is hitting the road as a real-life Lincoln Lawyer.

Ms Wilson — in an echo of the hit 2011 thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, who runs his legal practice out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car, has moved her practice out of her offices and into clients’ homes — thought to be a first for the profession in Bermuda.

Now Ms Wilson — who specialises wills and estate planning, probate law and general legal advice — is available for concierge-style consultation in familiar surroundings, including evenings and weekends.

She said: “The face of law is changing in Bermuda. Formal offices with leather-topped desks are making way for couches and dining room tables.”

Ms Wilson explained that drawing up wills and estate planning often involved discussing sensitive subjects and that clients felt more relaxed at home.

She said: “It was purely because a couple of clients called me and said they had somebody in hospital who wanted to see me about various matters, so I went to the hospital.

“It just went from there — other people said they needed their wills done, but they worked as taxi drivers or couldn’t get to the office during normal working hours, so I said I would come to their house.”

Ms Wilson added: “It’s certainly a novel approach and I think I’m the first. I don’t know of anyone else doing this.

“It’s been received really well — I have a lot of people who were former clients and knew I was still practising approach me.”

And Ms Wilson, whose Wilson & Co, offices are on Somerset Rd, Sandys, said increasing numbers of people were opting for a home visit rather than an office consultation.

She added: “There is the option, if people want to come to the office, to do so, but I probably spend more time going to people’s houses. It’s really taken off.”

She added: “It’s also got the potential of cutting down on operating expenses, rent and so forth, which could be passed on to clients.”

And she said: “The great thing is Bermuda is relatively small, so it’s very easy to get around.”

Ms Wilson — an ex-Senator and two-time former Attorney General and Minister of Justice under PLP Governments — won the Sandys South Central seat at the last general election.
