Carifta names Evans for technical role

Dr Freddie Evans has been appointed as a technical official for the Carifta Games in April.

The appointment is the second for a Bermuda National Athletic Association official after president Donna Watson’s selection as organisational delegate for the North American, Central American and Caribbean Under-23 Championships in British Columbia in August.

“We received correspondence yesterday that Dr Freddie Evans has been selected as one of the technical officials for the Carifta Games in Martinique by the technical delegate,” Watson said. “Dr Evans will lead the team of officials for the throwing events.

“Dr Evans became a certified official for the Carifta Games which were held in Bermuda when we certified several of our local officials. He was the head track and field official at the NatWest Island Games last year and continues to officiate and lead our officials at our local track meets. Dr Evans is also our general secretary on the BNAA board of directors.

“We are very excited about this and know that Dr Evans will represent us very well.”

Watson’s role as organisational delegate requires her to “make sure that everything outside the track and field events runs smoothly”.

“That includes the transportation and accommodation for the athletes, meals and that there are sufficient fluids for the athletes,” said Watson, who recently travelled to British Columbia.

“So anything outside of the track meet itself is under my remit. I will work with the chairperson of their local organisation.”

Watson, who is also the chef de mission for Bermuda for the CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico, in November, did not have to think long before accepting the appointment.

“The only reason I probably hesitated, and that was only for a couple of seconds, is because I’m also the chef for CAC,” she said. “It’s a two-day meet, so it’s not going to use up a lot of my work time.”

Watson believes the successful hosting of the Carifta Games in Bermuda may be the reason local officials are getting assignments to overseas events.

“Carifta was so successful, they were so impressed with the organisation of it and so impressed with the officials, that I think now they are saying ‘we can use these guys’.” Watson said.

“This is a good step for Freddie, too, because if he does a great job, which I know he will, when they have world events he will become big on that list.”
