House of Assembly returns to work on Friday

The proposed national ballot on casino gaming may have been discarded by Government — but the Gaming Referendum Act 2013 will return nevertheless as the House of Assembly reconvenes on Friday.

The Act has been carried forward, according to Government whip Cole Simons

Legislators will also examine the Corporation of Hamilton’s ground lease of the city’s waterfront to Allied Trust and Allied Development Partners Ltd.

MPs are scheduled to consider the waterfront development agreement as well but their debate is likely to be a short one.

At the last session of Parliament, Opposition MPs abstained from voting to signal their displeasure at the requirement for Parliamentary oversight of the Corporation’s deals.

A motion by Shadow Health Minister Zane DeSilva remains to be discussed: that the House take note of rising healthcare and insurance costs, and the need to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare.

There is also a motion by Progressive Labour Party MP Dennis Lister that a Select Committee of the House be appointed to review the viability of the decolonisation of Bermuda.

New matters include a parliamentary question from Mr DeSilva on the status of the shelved National Health Plan.

Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert will question Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell on the Tourism Authority.

And independent MP Terry Lister is scheduled to question Premier Craig Cannonier on the Gaming Referendum.
