Whether you’re happily single, still in that butterflies stage of your romance or been coupled off for a while now: Happy Valentine’s Day.

It’s the one day each year when people around the world gather to celebrate love.

So what better occasion to ask people in the City of Hamilton about what brands and styles they love most when it comes to fashion?

The Royal Gazette Lifestyle section roamed the streets and spotted three well dressed individuals for this week’s fashion column.

Twenty-five-year-old Patrice Phillips can usually been seen wearing simple and classic pieces.

She said she’s “not very trendy” and prefers to find basic ‘investment pieces’ that will not only look good now, but also five years down the road.

“I just try and keep it very basic and very classic,” she explained. “I try to always go with something black, like a black skirt, blazer or pumps and keep my outfit very neutral.”

When it comes to brands she loves, she said Michael Kors is one of her favourites. Not only does the accessory collection look good, it’s also inexpensive as well, she said.

She recommends for people to keep it simple this Valentine’s Day. Her advice was: “Don’t go too heavy with the prints or too many details. Keep it classic and simple. I think that’s always in style.”

IT manager Lloyd Holder described his business style as “trendy conservative”. He takes inspiration from neat lines and wants his overall look to be clean and well put together.

The 36-year-old said he likes brands like Ted Baker, Zara and Hugo Boss the most.

“I can just walk in the store and walk out and everything fits me exactly. This is a Zara suit, I got a few years ago and it’s still good to wear now,” he said.

Mr Holder’s best advice for males hoping to stand out this Valentine’s Day is to add a pocket square to their look.

“It’s something that adds a pop of colour to your outfit,” he said. “Someone might put on a suit and red tie because it’s Valentine’s Day. But what’s going to take it to the next level and make it different is the pocket square in a bold colour or pattern.”

For Tiffany Dawson, the best advice for anyone looking to shine this Valentine’s Day is simple.

“Be yourself and be comfortable and make sure your shoes are comfortable,” she said. “You don’t want to take your shoes off while you’re still on the date. The biggest thing is just to feel confident and look your best.”

The 30-year-old said she tends to dress based on how she feels when she wakes up.

She described her style as “versatile” and might wear a suit one day and lounge-like slacks the next day, depending on her mood.

Her favourite brand is the French haute couture and ready-to-wear line, founded by designer Coco Chanel. She said: “I love everything about Chanel. I think their style is just exquisite.”
