Triple jumper Smith qualifies for Carifta

High flyer: Bermuda's Chas Smith has qualified for the Carifta Games

Chas Smith has become the latest Bermuda athlete to reach the Carifta Games, leaping 14.48 metres in the triple jump at a meet in Canada recently.

Smith, 18, is a student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and reached the standard of 14.30 in the under-20 men’s category.

It ranked him third among the triple jumpers in the Canadian Inter-university Sport where Smith’s team-mate, Jordan Bruce, is ranked No?1 after jumping 15.21.

“Chas is a dedicated athlete and hard worker, and of course a great team-mate to all,” Kevin Bourgeois, the Dalhousie coach, said. “I affectionately call my jumps group at Dalhousie the ‘Flight Crew’ and they take great pride in being one of the top jumps groups in the Canadian university track world.”

Smith was part of a 23-member Bermuda team for last year’s Carifta Games in the Bahamas, competing in the under-20 high jump. Seven athletes have now qualified for the Carifta Games which will be held in Martinique from April 18 to 21.
