Familiar face to be seen at BNG talk
When Pulitzer prize winning photographer David Turnley lectures at the Bermuda National Gallery next month he may look a little familiar. That’s because his identical twin brother, Peter, also one of the world’s top photographers, lectured at the BNG exactly a year ago.
Over the last thirty years the two have photographed most of the world’s major events, and often competed head to head for some of the world’s top photo prizes.
David Turnley’s presentation, Exposing Humanity, will take the audience on a powerful photo-journey around the world. He won his Pulitzer for his coverage of all the revolutions in 1989, including the fall of the Berlin Wall and Tiananmen Square in China.
He was a runner-up for the Pulitzer four other times. He has won the World Press picture of the year twice, the prestigious Robert Capa Award for Courage, and four Overseas Press Club awards.
David got his big break in South Africa. He spent three years cultivating a relationship with Winnie Mandela. He was there waiting with his camera when the late Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison after 27 years. He also photographed Mandela’s later visit to his old prison cell on Robben Island.
He produced eight books including Mandela: Struggle and Triumph. His first film, The Dalai Lama: At Home in Exile, produced by CNN, was awarded the 2001 Cine Golden Eagle and nominated for an Emmy. He was awarded Best Documentary at the Miami International Film Festival for his film La Tropical, shot in Cuba.
As a commercial director, he is represented by Furlined and recently directed a Nike Air Jordan commercial with Wieden + Kennedy. His photographs are syndicated by Getty Images and Corbis. He has a Bachelor’s degree in French Literature from the University of Michigan, an Honorary Doctorate from the New School in New York, and did a Neiman Fellowship at Harvard.
He is fluent in French and Spanish and lives in New York City.
This will be his first visit to Bermuda.
He will be speaking on March 4 in the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall with a 7pm reception and a 7.30pm presentation. Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Tickets are available at BNG, City Hall. For more information contact membership@bng.bm or call 295-9428.
