Jacobs and Palmer grab top honours in magic mile
Aaron Jacobs, of TN Tatem, and Lynsey Palmer, of Saltus, won the 13-15 boys and girls mile races during the Telford Electric Magic Mile races on Saturday at the National Sports Centre.
Jacobs, the winner of last month’s Middle School race in the KPMG Invitational Front Street Mile, ran to victory ahead of Berkeley’s Akim Johnson in 7min 34.1sec while Johnson finished in 7:55.4. TN Tatem runners occupied the third to ninth places, with Jankeylo Burgess third, Jazari Caisey fourth and Myles Smith fifth.
Palmer, second to Ashley Irby in the Front Street Middle School Mile, finished five seconds ahead of Messiah Greaves of Bermuda High School while Laura Hope of Saltus was third and Erica Hawley fourth. Palmer had a winning time of 8:13.2 while Greaves finished in 8:29.9 and Hope in 8:55.5, beat Hawley in a close finish by one second.
Irby, of Saltus, had the fastest time among 54 competitors in the 10-12 girls mile, clocking 8:27.7 while Mikaela Outerbridge of Bermuda High School, was second in 8:41.9 and Jessie Marshall of Saltus third in 8:47.2.
Sajan Harvey, of Warwick Academy, had the best time among 65 runners in the 10-12 boys mile, finishing in 7:44.8 while schoolmate Alex Pilgrim was second in 7:45.2 and Ryan Outerbridge of Clearwater third in 7:51.9.
The 8-9 boys and girls also ran the one-mile course, which took the runners out of the stadium and into the Arboretum. Jade Johnston, of West Pembroke, continued her successful season by winning the girls race in 8:37.9 while Tesyah-Mahle Astwood, also of West Pembroke, was second in 8:54.6, ahead of two Northlands runners, Yasmyne Swann and Shayla Cann.
Stefan Jones, of Somerset Primary, won the boys race in 8:30.3 while Tommy Marshall of Saltus was second in 8:32.9 and Paget’s Ajani Burch third in 8:57.6.
The 19th Telford Electric Magic Mile attracted in the region of 900 competitors in age groups from 4 to 15, competing in quarter-mile, half-mile and one-mile races. The four and five-year-olds did one lap of the track, the six and seven-year-olds two laps and all other age groups a mile course from the stadium and including the Arboretum.
