Purple-themed grub day raises awareness for anti-bullying campaign

At the Bermuda High School, three students from every grade level are elected by peers to take on the role of becoming a BHS Angel — an initiative formed from the Dare to Care anti-bullying seminar that came to the island last year. The Angels all wear gold pins and thick purple wristbands embroidered with their motto: ‘Be The Change’, so that other students, especially those in younger years, can easily see who to come to when they need to report an incident of bullying. The Angels have also received extensive training on how to deal with bullying incidents when they occur and are appointed to monitor students at lunchtimes because bullying more often occurs in the absence of teachers. The BHS Angels also meet frequently to brainstorm and organise anti-bullying events, such as the purple-themed grub day on Friday, February 28th, when all BHS students and staff wore purple to celebrate that BHS is a “No Bully” zone. The grub day was free and had a huge turnout, with the majority of the school’s students and faculty covered head to toe in purple clothing and accessories. The aim of this grub day was to simply raise awareness of bullying and the role of the BHS Angels. Prizes were given out to students in each year group based on the amount of purple worn. The Angels have also been selling Be The Change wristbands in the school to help pre mote anti-bullying. Other initiatives that will take place during this academic year will be the creation of a BHS film ‘Acts of Kindness’, the viewing/discussion of video clips on bullying and a poster competition on the theme of “no bullies”.
