Rugby Canada to tour the Island

Rugby Canada will arrive in Bermuda today for a week-long tour, during which its three youth teams will play against its Bermuda counterparts.

This will be the second year that Rugby Canada has toured Bermuda. The tour party will consist of 85 players, coaches and parents coming from British Columbia and Newfoundland. Matches will involve players in three age groups — under-13, under-14 and under-15.

The tournament is the brainchild of Keith Hodgkins, the Bermuda Rugby Football Union chairman, and Rugby Canada’s Rick Bourne and is growing in stature on the local rugby calendar mainly because of the sponsorship of Langara Fishing Lodge in Canada and the support of Onsite Engineering, a local firm.

All the matches will be played at the National Sports Centre’s North Field, starting on Saturday with a sevens tournament from 10am to noon and then followed by 12-a-side and 15-a-side matches starting at 12.30pm.

Rugby Canada has two sevens teams in the under-14 and under-15 age groups and one team in the under-13s, while Bermuda will field three under-13 teams and two teams in each of the under-14 and under-15 categories.
