Ashley Estwanik smashed the longstanding Bermuda women’s half-marathon record yesterday, crossing the finish line of the New York City Half-Marathon in 1hr 19min 18sec.

In freezing conditions yesterday, she stuck to her pre-race plan of breaking 1:20 in the 13.1-mile race and cruised through the first 10K in 37:58. She maintained a pace that was a fraction more than six minutes per mile to finish 193rd overall out of 20,750 finishers and 26th in the women’s race. She was also second in her age group.

Estwanik, 36, eclipsed the national women’s record of 1:21:07 set by Anna Eatherley in 1993.

Also competing in the women’s race from the Island was Deon Breary, who set a lifetime best of 1:27:59 as she came home 638th overall and 100th among the women.

Finishing between Estwanik and Breary were Martiz Theron in 1:22:39, Craig Rothwell in 1:23:28 and Mark Robinson in 1:27:34.

A total of 21 runners from Bermuda were listed as finishers in the race, which was won by Geoffrey Mutai, of Kenya, in 1:00:50.

Kenya also produced the women’s winner, with Sally Kipyego breaking the tape in 1:08:31.
