Thousands get stuck in Baltimore due to snow, ice

Warwick Academy’s Year 7 English class with Mrs Hind is studying journalism at the present time. Their assignment was to write a newspaper article. They were responsible for coming up with the idea for the article, researching it and then finally to write it. Here are two of the submissions that you might easily read about in the regular pages of The Royal Gazette.

On March 3rd the Bermuda Gymnastics Association boys’ team got an extra day to play in the snow and an extra-long journey home when their flight from Baltimore was cancelled due to a snowstorm.

The prediction was for six to 12 inches of snow. Then the temperature dropped and the snow turned to ice around 11am. Then the ice turned back to snow about two hours later at 1pm. There were multiple problems with the snowstorm including that all public transportation was cancelled, the government offices were closed, the roads where icy resulting in accidents on the highways, and schools and universities where closed.

Our Delta flight was cancelled because of ice on the runways which meant we could not get home on the day that we were supposed to. Nearly 3,000 people were impacted. Some had to sleep in the airport. Ploughs and salting trucks went around clearing main roads for transportation.

The BGA boys had to take the long way home. We were rerouted through Detroit and New York. Nobody was certain that we were going to get out of Detroit because of the weather, but we did. It caused a lot of confusion because we were not sure if we could stay in our hotel room for another night.

The drivers wanted to return the car a day early because they were not certain about driving on the ice, but this meant no transportation. We were worried because our hotel did not have a restaurant, which caused a problem with getting food because we weren’t sure restaurants would deliver.

We found out that food places would deliver so we got pizza and Chinese food. We also got an extra day to play in the snow and go shopping. The journey back home was extra-long. If it had not been for the storm our journey back to Bermuda would have taken five hours instead of eight. Winter has been long and hard this year and people wish desperately that it would end.
