Joyner resumes quest

High winds: Play was postponed yesterday in the Bermuda Open at Port Royal Golf Course

Glenn Joyner, the European Senior Tour player, will resume his hunt for the Bermuda Open title when play resumes at Port Royal today.

The Australian, who is making his tournament debut, leads the field by three-shots with a score of 144 at the halfway stage of the 72 hole event. Yesterday’s third round was postponed due to the windy conditions.

Gary Venning, the tournament director, said: “Winds were gusting up to 30 knots and the forecast was for it to increase throughout the day.

“At 11:30am I was standing on the range at Port Royal with my hand anemometer and the wind was 40 knots sustained gusting to 55 knots. In those conditions it is almost impossible to play and very unfair on the players.

“The balls will not stay on the greens — particularly on the exposed holes like sixteen and nineteen.”

Venning said Port Royal’s par 71 layout has held up fairly well in spite of the inclement weather.

“The course appears in reasonable shape,” he said. “There was not much rain, the biggest problem is the number of palm fronds that have blown down.”

The remaining 36 holes of the tournament are scheduled to be played today, with the third round to get underway at 7:30am and final round at 1pm. Three-shots off the lead is Bermuda’s Michael Sims in a tie for second with Justin Reiger, of America.

Bermudian Jarryd Dillas leads the amateur division by six shots.
