Warwick Academy students find their voice

WARWICK ACADEMY — ENGLISH CAFÉ

Last week Warwick Academy held its first event showcasing talent within the Secondary English Department. Named ‘The English Café’ the event placed on stage poets, writers, readers, speakers, a winning group presentation and two dramatic Shakespearean pieces by students recreating the genres as they would in a classroom setting. The evening was narrated by Lisa Taylor, the Head of English at Warwick, who explained to the audience what each performance entailed and how it fit into exposing and developing English talent within the school. In particular the parents and staff heard from Olivia Moore, a budding novelist, about the development of her career and an expert from a short story she wrote. Mckenzie Hassell entertained with a stand-up inprov of a character from a novel they are studying in class; Jaylen Dill impressed with his poetry including a rap version and Hannah Snelling’s and Zachary Myers’s short stories where hard hitting. All in all an entertaining and successful event. The schools aim is to develop opportunities for students to express their skills and passions and the evening proved to be a success. A similar showcase is planned for the Practical Arts Department next term.
