Najib ‘Tanzaoui’ Chentouf

Najib [TanZaoui] Chentouf, who goes by stage name, Tan-Z, is no stranger to the stage at Chewstick.

As one of the co-founders of The Chewstick Foundation, Mr Chentouf has spent the past five years working to provide a platform for other artists to develop and showcase their talents.

Now he’s ready to step back into the spotlight for his first ever live feature show tomorrow at 9pm.

Mr Chentouf said he made a personal commitment at the end of last year to reconnect with his creative side. “This griot session will be the first of what I hope to be a rebirth of TanZaoui as a poet, song writer and comedian.

“I intend to compete in my first international poetry slam before the end of the year and I’m also developing a routine that will mix storytelling and stand-up comedy.”

Mr Chentouf said he had a long line of storytellers in his family. He not only grew up hearing stories from his Moroccan grandfather, he also watched his Bermudian grandfather preach at a Southampton Seventh Day Adventist Church.

“I have been on stage in one form or another since the age of eight in plays, poetry readings, as an MC for events, DJing, or as a part of a band,” he said.

“In a way I have always been comfortable in front of an audience, and this show is the first time I’ve felt nervous in quite some time. But for me, that’s a good thing, that means this weekend’s show is special.”

The artist will be entertaining the crowd with a mix of comedy, stories, poetry and music.

He will also have a couple special guests, as well as the D I A band, joining him for a few selections.

Deidra-Lee Bean, the spokeswoman for Chewstick, said Tan-Z’s performance would be “a testament to his skills as a storyteller and creativity”.

She said the artist was known for seamlessly mixing hip hop and poetry, with a medley of Moroccan-Bermudian flair and rhythm. As a result, it was guaranteed to make for an unforgettable evening, she said.

“Tan-Z’s son, Yassine [will serve] as opening act which is a perfect pairing and will definitely make this a family affair,” she continued.

“Following the show, people can stick around for a Carnival After-party with DJ Blazian Kidd and more.”

Mr Chentouf will be accompanied by a some of his favourite live musicians and special guests for the evening.

According to Ms Bean: “The night will be filled with artists and DJs and a pace that is guaranteed to get you out of your seat. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this mash-up of different vibes, dynamic talent and inspiring art.”

Mr Chentouf said people should come out to tomorrow’s performance “if they want to have fun, smile, maybe learn — and because TV is so mind numbing”.

Entry, $30, is payable at the door or in advance via www.ptix.bm.

Seating is limited, however, so organisers suggest you get there early. For more information call 292-2439 or e-mail info@chewstick.org.
