Town focused on double mission, says Wilkinson

Winning feeling: Town players celebrate winning the title at Goose Gosling Field last weekend

Jomar Wilkinson, the Dandy Town coach, insisted that his players were thoroughly motivated for their FA Cup Final showdown with North Village Rams at the National Sports Centre on Sunday.

Wilkinson said that his players had slightly reined in their celebrations after clinching the Premier Division title last weekend, and were fully focused on completing their second Double in three seasons.

“It hasn’t been hard for the players to refocus because we still have goals that haven’t been achieved, so we have to continue right until the final whistle of the season,” Wilkinson said.

“We know the importance of winning for the club. These titles are for the club and the fans to celebrate. The players are eager for success and have shown great maturity throughout the season.”

Town have had the better of Village in recent years and are unbeaten against Ralph Bean Jr’s side this season, drawing 2-2 at St John’s Field and winning 3-1 at Bernard Park.

During the 2011-12 season, Town also dominated against the Rams, defeating them in both the Dudley Eve Trophy and the FA Cup finals.

Wilkinson, however, believes that Village will be hungry for success after missing out the title, finishing five points behind Town as runners-up.

“When it comes to North Village, you know what you are going to get, so you have to be ready for lies ahead,” said Wilkinson, whose team finished last season empty-handed.

“Last season showed the guys that if you don’t put in hard work, you don’t get the rewards. Every player wants to play in the FA Cup Final and we will be up against one of the better sides on the Island. Village have a history in cup competitions and we have a mutual respect between us, so may the best team win come Sunday.”

Town’s Player Development League team will face BAA Wanderers in the PDL Knockout Cup at noon. At 2pm, St George’s Stallions take on Young Men’s Social Club in the Masters Division Knockout Cup final.

The FA Cup Final kicks off at 4pm.
