Boyce hopes to become the ultimate fighter

From football to rugby and kickboxing to boxing, there are not too many sports that Corey Boyce has not tried his hand at.

Boyce, a former North Village forward who represents the Bermuda Rugby Sevens team, returns to the boxing ring for his second amateur bout at Teachers Rugby Fight Night XVI: Relentless at Berkeley Institute Gym tonight.

The 24-year-old defeated Trey Simons, one of the Island’s top middle-distance runners, in a closely fought battle at last year’s Fight Night, but he will be up against a more experienced opponent in Shannon Ford, from the Bermuda Sanshou Association.

“I’m feeling pretty confident and I’ve had a lot more training than my last fight,” said Boyce, who represented Bermuda at the Caribbean Sevens Championships in Cayman Islands last November. “I’ve been working on a few technical things and I feel pretty healthy and fit.”

Boyce still feels more comfortable as a kickboxer, but believes that his boxing skills have developed considerably during his preparations for his bout against Ford, who has also previously trained as a kickboxer.

“I feel as though using my hands and legs helps me because you can throw your weight around more, but with boxing it’s a bit more about technique and movement,” said Boyce, who trains at the Bermuda Karate Institute,

“Boxing takes away from some of my strengths, but I’m still looking forward to it. I know [Ford] has had a few more fights than me, but otherwise I don’t know too much about him.”

While Boyce enjoys the variety of competing in multiple sports, he said rugby sevens had emerged as his first love and was looking forward to representing the Island in future tournaments.

“I love competing in different sports but right now I’m enjoying the rugby and boxing,” said Boyce, who featured for Robin Hood in the First Division this season. “I’m just trying to balance the two sports.

“I’m pretty into the rugby at the moment, especially as I’m in the national squad and it’s great being involved in the different trips and tournaments that they have. I think rugby offers a lot more experiences to me, in terms of travelling and playing against different countries.

“I think quite a few of the rugby boys will come out and watch the event. Hopefully, I don’t disappoint them.”

Entry is $50, with VIP tickets priced at $110. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Dante Noel-Simmons Education Fund.

Doors open at 6pm, with action starting at 7pm.
