Last meet for medal hopefuls

BNAA president: Watson

Bermuda’s Carifta Games squad, minus overseas trio Chas Smith, Dage Minors and Justin Donawa, will get one final competitive workout at the weekend when the Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) hosts a meet at the National Sports Centre at 1pm.

The squad for Martinique has been announced, with the BNAA opting for “quality over quantity” as they confirmed a team of 13 from 14 athletes who reached qualifying standards.

Devwah Whaley, a triple jumper, withdrew because of school commitments.

The majority of the team should be in action on Saturday, as well as other athletes trying to reach qualifying standards for other upcoming international meets such as the NACAC Under-23 and CAC Junior Championships.

Donna Watson, the BNAA president, said: “Lamont [Marshall] will probably be there because he is trying to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Trey Simons who is trying to qualify for NACAC Under 23s [British Columbia, Canada].”

Last year’s Carifta squad of 23 athletes brought back five medals from Bahamas and this time Watson expects all 13 team members to be in the hunt for medals.

In 2013, Kyrah Scraders won a gold and silver in the 800 and 1500 metres, while Sakari Famous won the silver in the under-17 girls high jump.

Both are in the team for Martinique, along with triple jumpers Smith and Donawa and middle distance runners Minors and Michaiah Robinson, who both narrowly missed out on bronze medals last year with fourth place finishes in the under-20 and under-17 800 finals.

Promising middle distance runner David Darrell will compete in his first Carifta Games, in the 1500.

Darrell was the senior boys’ winner in the KPMG Front Street Mile.

As for medals, Watson added: “David Darrell is a possibility, Michaiah Robinson is a possibility, you still have Jahnai Perinchief, Sakari Famous who won a silver last year and is jumping even higher. Chas Smith is doing excellent out there in Canada. In reality just about all of them are possibilities if they commit themselves.”

The Carifta Games will run from April 19 to 21
