Performer plans fund-raising birthday theatre show

Bermudian performer and educator Nishanthi Bailey hopes to celebrate her 30th birthday in style this year by raising $30,000 for local charities.

Ms Bailey, who currently teaches drama at Dellwood Middle School, will next month direct and star in the one-woman show ‘Chains’ by US playwright Pearl Cleage with the goal of supporting the community.

“I contemplated on how I was going to commemorate my birthday and knew that I wanted to accomplish one of the items on my bucket list,” she said. “Additionally, I wanted to give back in a way that is significant and special to me that the wider community has been in support of over the years — my life in the theatre.”

The play details a week in the life of 16-year-old crack addict Rosa Jenkins, who is chained by her father to a radiator after an attempt at rehab has failed.

The funds raised by the four-night show will be divided between anti-drug charity PRIDE Bermuda, theatre education group Coalition of Drama Educators and the Nadanja & Nishanthi N’tertainment “N3” scholarship, launched by Nishanthi and her brother Nadanja Bailey to support upcoming artists.

On the final night of the show there will also be a charity draw to benefit 30 other local charities.

‘Chains’ will be performed at Daylesford Theatre between May 21 and May 24. Performances will begin at 7pm, and tickets are available at www.bdatix.bm.
