Woolridge turns focus to international stage

In range: Woolridge, right, lines up a punch during his bout with Canadian Brozovich during Fight Night last weekend

Jermal Woolridge, the Bermuda sanshou fighter, is braced for a gruelling international schedule of competitions, starting with the Pan-American Wushu Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, in September.

Woolridge has also been invited to the Sanda World Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia in November, having won a silver medal at the World Wushu Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last November.

Confidence should be high for Woolridge after dismantling Canadian Joey Brozovich, of the MAS Academy of Martial Arts Training, via a unanimous points decision at Teachers Rugby Fight Night XVI: Relentless at the Berkeley Institute Gymlast weekend.

The BSA was represented by Kaelin Cox, Jason Lowe, Adam Chevis, Shannon Ford, Khalid Pitcher, Talia Iris and Woolridge at Fight Night.

Cox, Lowe, Chevis, who competed in boxing, and kickboxer Pitcher also won their bouts. Garon Wilkinson, the BSA president, said that his fighters could all be in action over the next few months at bouts in Bermuda and overseas.

“There are more local fight cards scheduled in the next few months so we hope to be able to participate in them whether it be in boxing, kickboxing or sanshou,” Wilkinson said. “Our main focus this year is the Pan American Wushu Championships. I plan to have a senior as well as a junior team take part in the event. With the great year we had last year and the positive start this year, I would expect to come back with some silverware.”

Wilkinson said that the BSA had also applied for a wild card for Sentwali Woolridge to compete at the Sanda World Cup.

“We have applied for Sentwali to receive a wild card to the World Cup in case one of the top four fighters at the World Wushu Championships are unable to compete,” he said. “The top four fighters in each weight category from the World Championships qualify for the World Cup and since Sentwali placed fifth he’s next in line to receive a spot.”
