Mother and daughter theme for walk/run event

The message will be ‘you go girl’ for mothers and daughters this month during the second annual Women in Sports 5K Run/Walk and Girls 1 Mile Run.

The Argus Group has again partnered with the Bermuda National Athletics Association and Bermuda Olympic Association to organise the event on April 27. This year’s theme is mothers and daughters.

Katura Horton-Perinchief, chairman of Women in Sports, a committee of the Bermuda Olympic Association, said the mother and daughter theme highlighted the importance of being active across generations and provided an opportunity for mothers and daughters to be active together.

“Our goal is for the spirit of this event to carry through to other sporting events throughout the year,” she said.

Donna Watson president, Bermuda National Athletics Association said last year’s inaugural event was a great success in bringing women together to participate and learn from each other.

“As women, it is important to encourage each other and to have fun staying active, and this event is designed to do just that,” she said. “We are pleased that the Bermuda Olympic Association and the Argus Group are partnering with us again this year.”

The walk and run was launched last year as part of the Women in Sports Expo held every two years to encourage girls and women to participate in physical recreation and sports.

There will be a one mile race at 3pm and a five kilometre run and walk at 3.15pm. Both routes begin and end at the Argus Group, 14 Wesley Street, Hamilton. Children under 18 can participate in the Girls Rock 1 Mile Run. Girls over 13 may also participate in the 5K walk or run.

“The Argus Group is always pleased to be involved with events that promote being active and we are delighted to be sponsoring a race that promotes physical activity among women,” said Alison Hill, chief executive officer, The Argus Group. “With this year’s theme of mothers and daughters, we are encouraging girls and women of all ages to join in and enjoy some exercise together.”

Registration is available online at www.racedayworld.com. The online registration deadline is April 25. Paper registration forms can be dropped off at the Bermuda National Athletics Association offices at 48 Cedar Avenue by April 23. Entry is $35 for adults and $15 for children under 18 years of age. Race numbers can be picked up from the Argus offices on Wesley Street on Saturday, April 26 from 9am until 12pm. The first 400 people to register will receive a T-shirt and bag.

Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each of the mother/daughter combinations. They will also be presented to the top three individual finishers in the one mile run and the five kilometre run, and a prize will be awarded to the company with the most participants, the school with the most participants and the National Sports Governing Body team with the most participants.
