So much to love about this holiday weekend

There’s a lot to love about the Good Friday and Easter holiday — especially if you hail from a place like Bermuda.

Whether you’re spending quality time making traditional paper kites with your children, sampling delicious fishcakes made by the chef in your household or just enjoying some much needed down time on one of the Island’s beaches — it’s all part of what makes the holiday weekend special.

The Royal Gazette Lifestyle section polled some of our contacts to find out from them what aspect of the holiday they enjoy most.

For some like Chewstick co-founder Najib Chentouf, it all boils down to the food.

“I absolutely love taking a walk down Horseshoe Bay with one my mother’s fishcake loaded with all the trimmings wedged into a hot cross bun and seeing all of the smiling faces at KiteFest,” he said. “It’s bliss.”

Event organiser Valentino Tear agreed — and said nothing beats the holiday dishes prepared by his mom.

“As we speak, my mother is kneading the dough for the hot cross buns and soaking the cod fish for the Bermuda fishcakes,” he explained.

“It is a very special time in the Tear household as it brings the family tighter in a very special way. Of course we all have our own special way that we prefer to dress our Bermuda codfish cake on a bun. Mine involves lots of hot sauce.”

According to community activist Dale Butler, the holiday holds a special spiritual significance for him.

“I enjoy listening to Stainer’s Crucifixion which is the Easter version of the Christmas Hallelujah Chorus songs and seeing how beautiful the churches are decorated,” Mr Butler said.

Communications manager Aderonke Bademosi Wilson believes Good Friday is the perfect opportunity to indulge in family, fun and fishcakes.

She said: “One of the best Good Fridays I remember was when my brother, Bim Bademosi, was living in London with his family.

“I went to visit and took my nieces a birdie kite each. We walked to a nearby park to recreate a Bermuda Good Friday. My brother and I were running around trying to get the kites up, the girls were more interested in playing with a ball than the kites.

“Bim and I argued about how to pitch the kite correctly, how much kite tail was really needed and whose fault it was the kites didn’t stay up. But it was a fabulous day.”

Belcario Thomas has a full schedule of events planned for the long weekend.

“My plan for Good Friday is to grab some pre-ordered fishcakes/hot cross buns from Paraquet on the way to Chewstick’s KiteFest at Horseshoe Bay, where I hope to bump into random friends.

“I’m inept at making a hummer kite, so I’m grateful to fly my free CellOne kite (I think they’ll be giving them away down there).

“Then I plan to head to a nearby friend’s house for loquat vodka cocktails and general debauchery.

“Easter Sunday will probably be spent in St George’s’s recuperating at my new favourite chill out spot and project ... Tobacco Bay,” he added.
