Butterfield and Ascendant rise

Both Butterfield Bank and Ascendant Group jumped in Bermuda Stock Exchange trading last week to lead the local stock market higher.

Butterfield gained six cents or three percent, to close on $2.05 on Thursday at the end of a trading week shortened for the Good Friday holiday, as 146,000 of the bank’s shares changed hands

Ascendant gained 35 cents, or 4.6 percent, to close on $9 on the trading of 100 shares.

Butterfield’s eight percent preference shares were the only others to trade on the BSX’s domestic board, falling $5 to close on $1,195 on the trading of eight shares.

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index added 31.36 points, or 2.16 percent, to close the week on 1,445.19.

Volume for the four-day week was 167,608 shares, while turnover topped $466,000.
