'It's not just a win for us, it's a win for all DJs'

The people's choice: Kuane Smith and Norman Godwin pose with their Entertainer of the Year award.

Magnum Force Sound is no stranger to the local entertainment scene, having been around since the early 1980s.

But the group recently reached a new milestone when it was selected for the People’s Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year by the Bermuda Entertainment Union.

“From my understanding we are the first group of DJs who have won it,” Norman Godwin, owner and founder of Magnum Force, said.

He said it was great to have reached a new goal, and hopes other DJs will see the example and carry on with it.

The sound crew is made up of five DJs, including Mr Godwin, Kuane Smith, Rodney Marshall, Keno Trott and Miguel Walker.

They beat out competition from other local entertainers including: Mark Anderson, the man behind entertainer Sybil Barrington, singer Sheila Smith, bands Prestige and The Unit and comedian Nadanja Bailey.

Magnum Force Manager Mr Smith said he was “in shock” when they were announced as the winners.

“Actually when I received the word that we had won I couldn’t even give a ‘Thank You’ speech because I was so taken aback,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting it, especially being on the same stage as renown entertainers around the Island.”

Mr Smith is hoping that the win will open more doors for the group and maybe even bring recognition to the talents of DJs around the Island.

“I didn’t see it as a win just for us but for the entire DJ fraternity as a whole,” he said. “Being the first group to be nominated it showed a different side of entertainment in Bermuda.

“People are known for supporting the singers and actors and comedians and stuff like that, so to be nominated as a DJ was a great achievement.”

Magnum Force have a diverse sound and play a range of music like Top 40, reggae, hip hop, R & B and even country music.

They can be found at Spring Garden Restaurant & Bar on Friday and Saturday evenings. They’re also known for hosting a popular ‘Heatwave’ bash every summer, with this year’s party taking place on July 12.

Mr Godwin said the award was particularly meaningful to him considering it was voted on by fans.

“I just want to big up all the fans who voted, our management team and for Spring Garden for having us throughout the years playing there,” he said. “This isn’t it for us and I hope we can set another record by wining it twice back-to-back, so look out probably around this time next year.”
