Hunt leads the way in Boston

Meb Keflezighi, of San Diego, celebrates his victory

Andrew Hunt led home 18 runners from Bermuda in the Boston Marathon.

Hunt, 30, reached the halfway point in the 26.2-mile race a fraction over 1 hour 30 minutes, before facing the hillier second part of the course which included the famous Heartbreak Hill. He crossed the finish line in 3:09.10 and was placed 3,962nd. More than 32,000 competitors started yesterday’s race.

Running an almost identical time was marathon veteran Geoff Blee, 49, who started off at a pace that would have brought him home in just under three hours. However, as the race progressed, his pace slipped slightly and he finished in 3:09.36. He was followed across the line by Manuel Lopes, in 3:32.02, Ricky Sousa, in 4:03:04, and Kim Willey, the first woman from Bermuda to finish in 4:03:57

The race is the oldest annual marathon in the world, and yesterday’s edition was the 118th. Last year the marathon was hit by a deadly bombing attack which killed three people near the finish line. A number of those competing from Bermuda yesterday also took part in 2013, including the Island’s sixth finisher Steven Oritz, who ran 4:08:50.

Other Bermuda finishers were Laura Anna Hocking in a time of 4:09:39) Darin Cassidy (4:12:57), Gemma Gowrie (4:13:49), Ali Hochberg (4:14:45), Kevin McGeever (4:18:18), Mynor Aguilar (4:24:59), Carol Griffith (4:36:06), Sangeeta Wagh (4:37:33), Kyle Smith (4:42:25), Natalie Dyrli (4:50:37), Joann Lee (5:18:59) and Candace Roach (5:25:35).

The overall race winner was US athlete Meb Keflezighi in 2:08:37, while the women’s winner was Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo in 2:18:57.
