It made me proud to be Bermudian

Emily McLaughlin 15, from New Jersey, launches a kite at Horseshoe Beach during the traditional Good Friday kite-flying festivities last week.

21 April 2014

Dear Sir,

My friend and I stopped by Astwood Park for a few minutes on Good Friday to watch the kite flying action. The park was crowded with individuals and families picnicking, playing games, relaxing and of course flying kites of all shapes and sizes.

It was a great atmosphere, everyone was happy. I got chatting with two gentlemen who were flying their beautifully designed Bermuda kites in different areas of the park. They separately told me that they come to Astwood Park every Good Friday, not only to fly their own kites, but also to assist others with the intricacies of making and flying Bermuda kites, adjusting the loops, working out the best length of tail needed, repairing them after the crashes etc. As one put it, “we have to keep our traditions going”.

I left the Park that day with a smile on my face...................proud to be Bermudian.
