Minors bows out with bronze win

Great memories: Minors

Dage Minors has plenty of fond memories from competing for Bermuda at four Carifta Games competitions.

Minors claimed the bronze medal in the boys’ under-20 1,500 metres at the recently completed Carifta Games in Martinique in a time of 3min 58.38sec.

He suffered misfortune in his final race, the 5,000, with the Franklin Pierce University student almost collapsing from high blood pressure when in the bronze medal position.

“It was four great years of competition that has helped me get where I’m in the sport at the moment,” Minors said.

“Of all the moments I will remember, overtaking the Saint Lucian, Marbeq Edgar, this year to take third place in the 1,500 was the best and fondest moment I have along with representing Bermuda on home soil in 2012.

“Overall, it’s been a great experience and I’m truly thankful for the opportunities.”

Minors made his Carifta debut in 2010 in the under-17 1,500, finishing eighth. A year later he captured his first medal, a bronze in the under-17 3,000 in Jamaica.

In Bermuda in 2012, Minors was pipped in the dying stages of the under-20 5,000 by team-mate Juma Mouchette who won bronze.

Last year’s Games were disappointing by his high standards, with Minors having to settle for fourth in the under-20 800.

He bounced back to medal form this year, though, and was on course to claim two medals before suffering from high blood pressure.

“I’m sad that it’s my last Carifta Games because they are such a great experience, and that goes along with the feeling I have about my final race. I had been putting in the work to do well but succumbed to the high humidity.

“Luckily, I fought hard a few days before and picked up the bronze in the 1500, which I believe was the first men’s medal in quite sometime in that distance for Bermuda.”
