Some great events as summer nears

Another Bermuda institution will soon be back for the summer season with the return of Harbour Nights on Wednesday, May 7. This will be in the usual time-slot from 7pm until 10pm and will continue up until September 3.

Most of you are very familiar with it but for any newbies or tourists reading this, every Wednesday of the summer months Front Street is closed to traffic and instead is filled with vendor stalls with various arts and crafts, al fresco dining, late night shopping until 9pm and live music and entertainment.

With an emphasis on keeping it local, there will be lots of Bermuda-made items for sale. The aim is to create a traditional authentic cultural experience that both tourists and locals can enjoy. The route is in a loop from the Flag Pole along Front Street, up Queen Street, to Reid Street, along to Burnaby Hill and then back down to the Flag Pole. There is no cover charge.

Whether you have an interest in breakdance, are looking for some new moves to add to your nightclub selection or simply want to come out and support a good cause, you won’t want to miss the Charity Breakdance Workshop on Friday, May 9. Two separate classes are being held at The Athletic Club from 6.30pm and 7.30pm and then from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. No prior dance experience is required, just a lot of enthusiasm and a little bit of attitude. The cost is $10 and all proceeds will benefit the Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre (through Bermuda Relay for Life). For more information, or to register, contact Gayle Lindsay at gaylelindsay1@gmail.com or 591-2709 or Kiran Jagoowani on kiran.jagoowani@gmail.com or 591-5043.

The Young Byes 7th Annual Charity Golf Classic will take place on Saturday, May 17 at Belmont Hills Golf Club.

This is a Captain’s Choice tournament with registration at 7.30am and an 8am shotgun start. The cost per team of four is $600, which includes green fees, carts and goodie bags. Hole sponsorship is also available at a cost of $400, or $900 if combined with a team entry. Space is limited to 25 teams and there will be raffle prizes and food at the prize-giving with prizes awarded to the male and female longest drive and closest to the pin. The entry form can be downloaded here. For more information, or to submit your entry, contact brfu19.manager@gmail.com.

Bermuda Day is only a month away and since May 24 is on a Saturday this year, the main events will be happening on the public holiday, Monday, May 26. This includes the historic Appleby Bermuda Half Marathon Derby, a race starting in Somerset at 9am and ending in Hamilton. This usually has more than 600 entrants and has been attracting the crowds and keeping us entertained since 1909. The entry fee is $45 for individuals or $160 for relay teams. The registration deadline is Friday, May 16. For more information, or to sign up, visit www.bermudamarathon.bm.

The other big Bermuda Day event is, of course, the Annual Bermuda Heritage Day Parade on Monday, May 26. This parade usually leaves Bernard Park at 1.30pm, ending at City Hall Car Park and includes all the usual favourites — floats, gombeys, majorettes, pipers, drum corps and dance troops. Full details should be on www.communityandculture.bm soon.

A workshop focusing on coming-of-age celebrations for girls will be held at the Healing Center on Euclid Avenue on Sunday, June 1. The Celebrating Her First Moon Workshop will run from 2pm until 4pm and all parents and guardians of girls are welcome. The cost is $50 per person and attendees should RSVP by May 29 as tickets will not be available at the door. For more information, or to RSVP, contact 238-3917 or inloveconsulting@gmail.com.
