Smith takes fourth in Florida

Camiko Smith

Camiko Smith had a fourth-place finish at the OGA Moonlight Tour yesterday Forest Lake GC near Orlando in Ocoee, Florida, where he shot even par in a one-day event that featured 26 players.

The 28-year-old Bermudian was one of three players carding a 72, two strokes behind the winner, Owen Curry, of Florida.

Smith, who is based in Orlando, was pleased with his performance. “I feel pretty good,” he said. “I haven’t played in the last two weeks when I took a break to work on my short game. They had a few Web.com players who come down here and tune up when they have a break.

“I feel pretty happy about my performance. I left a few shots out there but I’m happy with my finish. I’m going to play in some more OGA Moonlight Tour events in Florida leading up to the US Open qualifiers on May 13 in Point Judith Golf Club in Rhode Island.”

According to Smith, the OGA Moonlight Tour is like a development tour where a number of young professionals turn out. “They come here to pretty much put their stuff to test and see what they’ve got,” he said. “Anybody can play in it. Patrick Sheehan, who played on the Web.com tour, plays on it and a lot of guys who play on the PGA Tour came up through this tour.

“I’m just looking for some more events throughout the summer. I’ll play the Rhode Island Open in August and a few events in the Boston area.

“I’m loving it and improving every day. It’s fun, I get up at 4.00 every morning and go to the gym at 4.30.”
