What my mom taught me about fashion

Your mother was likely the one who taught you how to tie your shoes, brush your teeth or ride a bike, but what lessons did she teach you about style?

Lifestyle asked a few fashionable people who we spotted on the city streets this week that very question, in honour of Mother’s Day this Sunday.

Kevin Smith, a communications and rentals coordinator with the City of Hamilton, admitted that his style was all his own. However he said his mom did pass on a useful tip for how to stay looking neat.

“The most important thing my mom have ever advised me when it comes to style is to always iron my clothes,” the 24-year-old said. “I learned the importance of that when I got older.”

He said he likes loud pieces sometimes or might mix his style up by wearing something subtle.

And he tends to get inspired when clicking through social media sites like Instagram or reading magazines, like UK’s fashion publication ‘Pause’.

“Most importantly I like things that are original and speak to my character,” Mr Smith said. “I have things in my closet that people in Bermuda wouldn’t tend to wear, so it’s very much risqué, but also conservative. I know that’s somewhat of a contradiction, but it works.”

For Karthika Griffith, her style is usually comfortable and simple.

She said she was trying to encorporate clothing pieces that are “less plain and more colourful” into her wardrobe; and often finds new style ideas online or through looking at celebrity and real-life fashion.

The 27-year-old said the biggest style lesson she learned from her mom was about the value in being conservative.

“She’s a traditional Indian and was brought up there, so that part of her culture she passed down to me,” Mrs Griffith said. “Conservatism takes you far and in my opinion it’s better to leave a little to the imagination.”

“My mom also wears plenty of bright colours as per Indian tradition - something I am trying to pick up on.”

Langré Edwards agreed and said she learned a thing or two about how to dress modestly from her mother.

“She told me that if you are going to show your arms, don’t show much of your legs and vice versa: if you are going to show the legs, don’t show too much arm.

“There’s a balance. It adds mystery and still lets you be young and fresh and sexy, but not exposing yourself to the world.”

Ms Edwards, 25, said her style was very minimalistic, but when she does wear colour it’s usually something bold.

“I like a very 1940s look and stars like Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe,” she said.
