Pimentel rules the waves in Great Sound

Cameron Pimentel was the toast of the Spanish Point Boat Club after capturing Bermuda International Invitational Race Week honours in the Laser in yesterday’s light and shifty breezes in the Great Sound.

The 2016 Olympic hopeful capped a dominant display by posting a second and third in the final two races to finish the regatta nine points clear of second placed Malcolm Smith after discarding his worst two scores.

Brett Wright rounded off the podium finishers.

Pimentel was by far the best sailor of the regatta, winning eight of the twelve races contested and finishing no lower than third to claim the coveted International Race Week Championship Trophy.

“This is the first time that I have ever raced Race Week and it feels good to win,” Pimentel said. “I sailed hard the whole event, and I guess it paid off.

“I tried to be consistent and keep all my results in the top three. I tried to keep my drops low and do the best I could.

“I had good starts and did not take too many risks and knew that if I could get to the first mark in a good position I could hold it.

“I knew I could do well in the regatta, I just needed to make sure I did not make any big mistakes.”

Peter Wickwire, from Nova Scotia, has all but won the Vrengen Gold Cup awarded to the top boat in the classic International One Design.

Wickwire clinched the A Series earlier in the week and remained on course yesterday to capture the B Series as well.

With three races remaining, the Nova Scotia J24 champion and Argo Group Gold Cup sailor holds a five-point advantage over Patrick Cooper, of Bermuda, in the B Series but leads the overall series over the same rival by a more comfortable 33-point margin.
