Evans leads strong relay team in Bahamas

Top runner: Evans

Bermuda will send an 800 metres relay team to compete in the inaugural IAAF World Relay event in the Bahamas on May 24 and 25.

Aaron Evans, who enjoyed an outstanding performance in the Payton Jordan Invitational where he placed third in 1min 47.15sec, will be joined in the 4 x 400 team by Shaquille Dill, Lamont Marshall and Trey Simons.

Evans has spent the season with the Nike Oregon Track Club in Eugene, Oregon.

Dill and Simons will both be competing in a meet in Boston this weekend while Marshall recently took part in a meet in Jamaica.

“We are very excited about this event and look forward to the team participating,” said Donna Watson, the president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association. Watson will travel to the event, while the team will be accompanied by BNAA official Dr Freddie Evans.

“There will be multiple races for the 4 x 800 as there is no qualification standard and the winner of the event will be based on time. Of course we will be up against some tough nations like Kenya, who would be favoured in this event.”

Watson is excited about putting four of the Island’s best middle-distance runners together in the same relay team.

“As we have always said, our strength in Bermuda lies in the middle-distance events and the jumps,” said Watson, a former middle-distance runner. “Interestingly enough, when the relays were announced, several persons said to me, ‘I am sure you will be bringing a middle-distance team to compete’.”
