Wickwire owes title to trouble-free passage

There is something about Bermuda that seems to bring the best out of Peter Wickwire.

The Nova Scotia helmsman won the coveted Vrengen Gold Cup in the International One Design with a race to spare yesterday to bring the curtain down on Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.

And he did so with a bang by taking line honours in the penultimate race in the Great Sound before heading back to shore for an early lunch at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

“Things went very well this week and it was a really enjoyable experience,” said Wickwire, who made his Race Week debut this year. “This is a great regatta and a great result.”

Matthew Cairney, Rick Echard, Greg Lawrence and alternates Nicole Butterworth, Nico Stefani and John Nicolls formed part of Wickwire’s crew throughout the regatta.

“The boys sailed really well and just continued to put up top scores all week,” said Wickwire, who clinched the “A” Series title earlier this week. “We had on par boat speed, good course management, good starts and outstanding crew work, which makes it easier on me when that happens.

“We did not get into any trouble with any other boats and that was key to the success as well. We sailed clean and had no protests, and it works out well when you are competitive in all other facets of the race.”

Wickwire finished 36 points clear of second-placed Henry Arnold. Jan Petter Roed rounded off the podium, while Patrick Cooper was the top local helmsman and fourth overall.

Wickwire sailed consistently throughout the regatta in variable conditions. “We had everything from absolute drifter conditions to enough wind that they did allow us to fly spinnakers, so we ran the gamut,” he said.

Wickwire’s successful Race Week followed on the heels of his upset victory over Ian Williams, the multiple world match racing tour champion, in the 2012 Argo Group Cup.
