Smith steps closer to US Open

Moving on: Smith

Camiko Smith, the Bermuda golfer, is one step away from reaching the US Open after advancing from Local Qualifying at the Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Similar events were held all over the United States yesterday as golfers attempted to qualify for the US Open, which will be held at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina from June 12 to 15.

Smith shot a 75 yesterday and will now compete at Sectional Qualifying — 36 holes in one day — to be held at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.

He was one of five players to march on from his Local Qualifying.

n Arthur Jones broke a two-way tie for first place in the men’s division of the Bermuda Senior Amateur Championships going into today’s final round at Riddell’s Bay.

Jones was sharing the lead with Hav Trott after Monday’s opening round 70, but yesterday he pushed himself into a two-stroke over Trott after shooting a one-over par 71 while Trott carded a 73 for a two-round total of 143.

The title is likely to be challenged by the pair as defending champion Jeffrey Lindo is now ten strokes out of first place after a 73, which leaves him two strokes ahead of David Pickering and Richard Bartlett.

In the women’s championship, Kathryn Lloyd Hines leads by a comfortable nine strokes after two rounds after shooting an 80 yesterday for a total of 159. Kathrin Burnie fell three more shots back on 168 after shooting a second round 83 to lead third-placed Linda Down by three strokes.

Raoul Tyrrell shot an 87 to lead the men’s super seniors by one stroke over Leon Nearon after yesterday’s first round. Veronica Hines leads the women’s super seniors by 11 strokes after her round of 88 yesterday.
