Red desserts will raise awareness

Cafes and bakeries will be joining forces to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS by offering unique red coloured desserts throughout June.

Part proceeds from the sales of desserts — red being the symbolic colour for HIV/AIDS public awareness campaigns — will be donated to the AIDS therapy charity STAR. With next month marking HIV Awareness Month, the Department of Health’s ‘Rock Red for a Sweeter Life’ initiative hopes to both raise awareness about the disease, and “demonstrate support of those living with HIV/AIDS,” said a department spokeswoman.

“As we press toward our collective goal of an AIDS-free generation in Bermuda, it is important that our community rallies together to continue the progress made by HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention initiatives,” said Acting Director of Health, David Kendell.

“For Bermudian families that have been affected by HIV/AIDS, STAR has been instrumental in providing education, counselling, housing, and support for over 25 years.”

There will also be a public forum on June 24 that will feature HIV-positive guest speaker Marvelyn Brown.

Business owners interested in taking part in the initiative are encouraged to call Dy-Juan DeRoza on 278-6505 or djderoza@gov.bm for more information.

HIV testing will be held on June 27.
