Letters: Unnecessary Fight Night controversy

Chioke Tucker was left without an opponent

Dear Sir,

The controversy surrounding the pullout of the Controversy Gym fighters scheduled to headline the fights at the BAA Gymnasium on May 10 was very unfortunate indeed and my feelings are that it should never have happened. The full schedule of events should have proceeded as scheduled.

The concerns of the Bermuda Boxing Association and the International Boxing Association could have been ironed out in a more amicable way as opposed to the way things turned out on fight night at BAA gym.

As far as I’m concerned, the concerns of the Bermuda Boxing Association could have been a little less threatening. It’s wrong to assume that all the young boxing trainees at the Controversy Boxing Gym and Forty Rego’s Boxing Gym are aspiring to be professional fighters.

I’m sure many of them view it as another step to becoming well-rounded and successful citizens in the Bermudian community.

That is the reason why I feel, as long as they retain their amateur status, they should be allowed to fight on any boxing card here in Bermuda or anywhere else for that matter without sanctions being placed against them.

Chioke Tucker has every right to feel the way he does after all the training and preparation he has put in leading up to the bungled events that happened at the last minute. Chioke, hang in there; your day will come.

P.S. Hoping and waiting for the return of the golden years of boxing in Bermuda and remembering the venues of many of Fifties, Sixties and early Seventies where they took place: King’s Stadium, Tennis Stadium, Sports Arena, Hamilton Docks, BAA, PYC and probably a few other places.

The fighters came from the West End to the East End and they were some tough guys.

Kudos to the BGA for a job well done

Dear Sir,

I would like to extend a very loud “job well done” to the Bermuda Golf Association on the recently concluded Bermuda Senior Amateur Championships held at the Riddell’s Bay Golf Club. I have played in many golf tournaments both here and abroad and, in my opinion, the event at RBGC was of a very high standard.

At long last, the Bermuda Golf Association would appear to be moving in the right direction. There was a very real feeling during the event that the people now in place running golf in Bermuda had their hands firmly on the wheel and were turning it in the right direction.

Gary Venning, the new administrator, has made great strides during his first few months in office and there is every reason to believe that these early successes will be built upon going forward.

The new board is working hard to improve golf in Bermuda, and is succeeding. I would encourage all golfers in Bermuda to keep an eye on upcoming BGA golf events and to “GO PLAY!!”
