Cara Mallon: Dicing with danger

Twelve-year-old Cara Mallon behind the wheel of her go-kart.

The typical image of a woman is someone who stays home with the children and cooks, as well as cleans the house.

However, the real truth is that women’s opportunities are changing for the better, and go-karting has been one of those many options for a while.

Twelve year-old Cara Mallon has been one of three girls in her go-kart league for eight months.

Mallon has strong opinions about what her gender can do, and shows us how she feels women are shown to the world.

“Horribly,” said the determined twelve year-old. “(Women) are portrayed as the weak ones.”

However, that doesn’t seem to be the case in go-karting.

“In go-karting, women are treated (the same as) men, which I like,” Mallon explained. “There are only three girls in our league, but we get along well with the boys.”

Mallon is a daredevil girl, with a need for danger that everyday life just doesn’t fulfil.

“Beforehand, I was bored out of my mind (with life),” Mallon admitted. “I wanted to do reckless things like join the (Bermuda Regiment) Junior Leaders or go skydiving, just to pass the time.

“But then I heard that one of my Dad’s friends had a brother who go-karts — David Barbosa. And since then, David has been helping me develop my skills in go-karting.”

According to Mallon, the hard work has paid off.

She no longer has the desire to join an army (even if a junior one) or throw herself out a plane.

Her need for danger and excitement is now fulfilled by one of her passions-driving a small kart at breakneck speeds while at the risk of crashing.

Mallon has competed in the Dockyard Grand Prix for go-karting, placing sixth overall out of twenty.

She has entered the Front Street Grand Prix and has shared her feelings about the race.

“I am very nervous about go-karting at Front Street,” Mallon admitted. “But I can’t wait to do it! I love go-karting and I am thinking about getting my own kart. Since this is a proper race, I am scared but I still can’t wait.”

Mallon go-karts every other Sunday on the Clearwater track with all her fellow go-karters.

She’s one of the fiercest competitors there, and loves the adrenalin she gets from racing.

The rush of the world comes faster as Cara Alice Mallon grows up, with her mission for excitement and danger fulfilled.
