Sixteen Bermudian students focused on careers in insurance have seized the opportunity to participate in this summer’s BFIS ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ Intern Programmes in either Bermuda, London, Chicago or Atlanta.

Now in its 14th year, the three-week Bermuda programme started on May 27 and covers all aspects of the insurance market from how to form an insurance company to work-shadowing underwriters. Four Bermudians and two American students from the Katie School of Insurance & Finance at Illinois State University will be visiting 25 insurance, reinsurance companies and related organisations in Hamilton over the course of their programme. On June 13 they will be presenting what they learned to their hosting companies and BFIS trustees.

The Atlanta, Chicago and London programmes do not start until July, running from July 7—18. On July 28 each of the three intern groups will make a presentation to the BFIS Board, BFIS Donor Representatives and representatives from the hosting companies on what they gained from the programme.

BFIS Chairman Michael Fisher, meeting with the interns on the first day of the Bermuda programme noted that “None of this would be possible without the tremendous support of the industry whose members will be generously donating time to share their knowledge, insights and experience with the students.”

Also on hand to meet with the interns on their first day were three former interns, Brian Steinhoff (2007) Tyler Owen (2008) and Teniko Eve (2011) who talked about what they got out of the programme and how it helped them to make their way in the industry.
