Warwick Academy to accept pupils as young as four

Younger pupils: Warwick Academy principal Maggie McCorkell said the school will be accepting students as young as four, hopefully from September 2015

Warwick Academy is preparing to introduce a new “Reception Year” for students as young as four years old.

Principal Maggie McCorkell said the initiative is hoped to be up and running by September 2015, and will offer youngsters a sound foundation for academic, creative and physical development, along with a smooth transition into Primary level classes.

“The advantages of this are numerous for the students and will not only complete the school but also give our very youngest students the opportunity to learn through investigative play and take advantage of all the resources Warwick Academy has to offer,” said Mrs McCorkell.

“Learning outside the classroom, as well as inside, supports the development of healthy and active lifestyles, develops problem-solving skills and children’s creativity and Warwick Academy will play a beneficial role in shaping our young people to be productive members of society just as it has done over the past four centuries.

“Young children need space, and the extensive playing fields, sports hall and swimming pool at Warwick Academy will become their classrooms so they can explore and discover through sensory and physical experiences. They will have the benefit of being taught by subject specialists in modern foreign languages and physical education.”

Mrs McCorkell said the programme, which was developed after extensive planning and community feedback, will be housed in a secure, stand alone and specifically redesigned building on the school’s current campus, and be led by teachers specifically trained for the age group.
